In searching for a new apartment close to school, I notice that Google has once again changed the neighborhoods it lists for Chicago. This time, they've attempted to define the nebulous "Tri-Taylor" area, which I still don't understand the etymology of, and added in "University Village / Little Italy" among some others. Both welcome changes, since these are the names everyone uses these days. The only thing left is the stupid "Lower West Side" label. Yes, I know the "Lower West Side" is one of the 77 official community areas cooked up by the U of C back in the day, but nobody uses that term. Instead, "Pilsen" has been almost universally used to refer to that neighborhood for a very long time, since the turn of the century when Pilsen was heavily Bohemian, not Mexican as it is today (Pilsen is a city in the Czech Republic). So please, Google, get rid of this "Lower West Side" nonsense and call it what the residents have called it for a hundred years: Pilsen. (Edit: not the only stupid one: I've never heard Little Village actually referred to as "South Lawndale." Get rid of that one too.) |

| Housing Changes Incoming |

Nothing ever stays the same, for better or worse. All 3 of my roommates decided that they're going to find their own apartments after our current lease expires, and that means my housing situation is in limbo again. I could either find new roommates and stay in my current apartment, or find new roommates and a new place. I'm leaning towards finding a new place right now, just because my current apartment is HUGE, and I have no furniture (everything currently belongs to my roommates), so furnishing this place is going to be extremely expensive. Also because it's so huge, the heating bills this winter have been ridiculous, and I don't feel like paying $125/person in energy bills in a month ever again. The only problem with this is that my current lease expires at the end of March, which is a month before the good UIC-area apartments are starting to be advertised. I may end up temporarily moving in with friends or (shudder) back with my parents for a few weeks until I can get new housing arranged. However, on the plus side, there's this really cute sweet girl in my German class, and things are going well with her... :D _WRF. |
